Weblebrities and Netizens

Just wanted to let everyone know that I’m still alive, done a terrible job lately of posting. I’m sure I and other bloggers ’round the world make this type of post at least twice a year. I don’t want to write without a purpose so I leave you with some words that I’ve learned lately.

Weblebrity - Celebrity who’s pretty much only famous online.

Examples

  1. Perez Hilton http://perezhilton.com/
  2. Scoble http://scobleizer.com/
  3. Amanda Congdon http://amandacongdon.com/blog/
  4. Lonely Girl 15 http://www.lg15.com/

Netizen - Citizen of the Net (or web person, probably lives online, more so than they live offline)

Examples

  1. Eloy
  2. Anyone who works at Schipul
  3. Anyone works at PopLabs
  4. Pretty much everyone who works in the web world
  5. Anyone who owns a myspace + facebook and has no job

My examples are pretty weak, if anyone out there has some better examples … please let me know.

Free Rice - United Nations to Help End World Hunger

FreeRice is a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com.

FreeRice has two goals:

  1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
  2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site.

Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor country, improving your vocabulary can improve your life. It is a great investment in yourself.

Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive. Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide. Thank you.

Vector Art Tutorials and Resource

Enjoy Vector Art? I know I do. Ok, honestly … I’ve never touched vector art, but it is amazing. It’s very web2.0. Very crisp clean lines, smooth (non pixelated) gradients … all together it really is a beautiful thing.

One of our latest graphic designers is amazing in vector graphics, and now you can too. He has a blog.

Stanford has also made it easy for anyone to create some vector art of their own. Brought to my attention via Will.

Air Houston Competition

This past weekend I was in an Air Houston Competition. Programmers (me) build NPO (non profit organization) websites in one day. Very nerve racking but lots of fun, and overall it’s just nice because you’re giving back to the community.

We build highly-accessible sites. Visit knowbility.org for more information on how internet is for everyone.

Below is a picture of Katie expressing her feelings towards the Air Houston Competition.

Facebook worth 15 Billion

In case you haven’t heard. Microsoft just payed 240 million to own 1.6 percent of Facebook stock. Facebook is currently worth 15 billion. Microsoft pays 250 million to own 1.6 percent, this gives you a really good idea about what 15 billion dollars actually is. I hate Mark Zuckerberg, 23 .. Ok, I don’t … I’m just really really jealous.

On that note I’m also jealous of Brian, he’s a fellow programmer here at Schipul and he wrote a Facebook song. Don’t ask me why he stuck his Facebook song on MySpace.

Another transition; There’s a MySpace Song by Gym Class Heroes, it’s cool.

This is still my favorite Gym Class Hereos Song/Video though.

Left Brain vs. Right Brain

Stare at the image and tell me if you see it going clock-wise or counter clock-wise. It’s suppose to tell you if you’re a logical thinker or more of a “feely” kind of person. I’m freaking out, I can see both of them. I’m scared.

Kiva.org - Loans that Change Lives

If you’re a giver check out Kiva.org Kiva allows you to give loans on a one-on-one basis. You search through a list of entreprenuers where you’ll find out details about where they live, their names, what they would like the loan for, and when they need to repay you.

An interesting twist on donating to a ’cause that takes out the ambiguity of where your money actually ends up. Kiva allows you to easily keep up with your family and find out exactly where your money is being used. Kiva does not take any of your loan for their own cause, but does allow you to donate in case you’d like to support Kiva. The members of the Kiva community can also keep journals which allows you to learn more about your contributions and the life style your new found friend.
